Accused murderer Omar Roane, who escaped from the back of a prison van last weekend, was captured Friday night in Harrisburg, police said.

Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore confirmed that Roane, 22, had been apprehended.

John Patrignani, acting U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said Friday night that deputy U.S. marshalls and Dauphin County police, including a SWAT team, arrested Roane at a house in the 3100 block of Hoffer Street in Harrisburg.

“The task force, in the early evening, learned that Roane was in the Harrisburg area,” Patrignani said. “We called the Harrisburg task force. Deputy U.S. marshals and the Dauphin County police were mobilized. At about 10:30 p.m., someone who fit his description was seen in the house. He was ordered out of the house and taken into custody without incident.”

U.S. marshals were offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Roane, but Patrignani indicated the information had come in other ways, which he declined to explain. Patrignani said Roane was being held in the Dauphin County Jail and that Philadelphia detectives would go to Harrisburg Saturday to transport Roane back to Philadelphia.

Roane, of Southwest Philadelphia, and two other inmates were being taken to the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on Aug. 14.

When the van stopped at a light at Frankford and Cottman Avenues in the Northeast, the men forced open the doors and fled. Two of the men were caught immediately, but Roane had eluded authorities.

Roane was arrested the day before his escape and charged with the June 2009 shooting death of Kyree Young during an alleged drug robbery. Roane was processed at the Homicide Unit and sent to jail, without bail. He was still wearing street clothes – shorts and a sweater – when he escaped
